NOT ONE AMONG THEM WHOLE: A Novel of Gettysburg (Kindle Edition)
I was drawn into this book immediately with the great description of characters who even though I’m done reading the book, I still often find myself thinking of. He moves seamlessly through the various characters and scenes throughout the book which keeps you wondering about the other characters as you are reading.
He provides a look into how difficult the situation was for the surgeons using graphic detailed descriptions of the long hours spent operating and removing parts of so many young men and how they struggled to keep them nameless to preserve their own emotional well being. The physical toll on them as well was described by the fatigue, and even symptoms of urinary tract infection.
There is also attention to detail of the emotional and psychiatric hardships suffered by everyone from the soldiers and their families to the medical personnel to the mortician and his assistant.
I’m not a history buff but this book provided a look at a very important part of our history.
Edison McDaniels is a phenomenal writer and I look forward to reading more of his books.
